With more than 230,000 hectares/570,000 acres of tropical rainforest in the departments of Olancho, Colon and Gracias a Dios, the 7 communities in the Tawahka Asgani Biosphere Reserve are part of the International Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.

Approximately 1,500 inhabitants live in this reserve where the Tawahka people, of macro-Chibcha origin, engage in a subsistence lifestyle through hunting, artisanal fishing and extraction of forest products for domestic needs.
